Enthusiasts from the "Udice" Sports Fishing Club came up with the idea of organizing a spearfishing competition just before New Year's; while the rest of Europe was blanketed in snow, the weather in Mali Lošinj was quite pleasant, offering a chance to draw public and visitor attention to the island's mild climate. The idea was realized in 1959, and the tradition of holding New Year's spearfishing competitions has continued to this day. The first World Spearfishing Championship was held in Mali Lošinj back in 1957.
The competition will take place in the waters surrounding the island of Lošinj. After the hunt, the catch is handed over on the mother ship.
