Port Rovenska - fishing port

The fishing part of Veli Lošinj is located in a bay named after bora wind that rummages (ruje) with tremendous force.
Veli Lošinj’s white fish canned in gelatin, the so-called želadija, was highly appreciated in Venice in the 17th and 18th centuries and was paid in gold. As the regulations at the time restricted the number of fishing licences, fishermen played a lottery and drew their fishing posts for the year, so it was a matter of luck. The maritime health service had to inspect the entire catch and other ship cargoes, which was paid by the best samples of fish that went to the rulers in Osor until the fall of the Venetian Republic in the late 18th century.
