Lošinj Flags from the Mast, Stern and Bow - Historical Exhibition

Location: Galerija Fritzi Gallery - Lošinj museum
Time: 5.-6.11.2025.

On Friday, 5 September, at 8:00 p.m., the Fritzi Gallery in Mali Lošinj will host the opening of the historical exhibition Lošinj Flags from the Mast, Stern and Bow, curated by Petra Radić and Daniela Kušpilić Grubišić, and organized by the Croatian Maritime Museum Split and the Lošinj Museum.

The turbulent history of changing state systems along the eastern Adriatic is symbolically reflected in the succession of flags – political emblems of empires, kingdoms, and states that came and went from the historical stage. Today, carefully preserved in museum display cases and storerooms, these fabrics bear witness to centuries of ambition, instability, and the shaping of Croatia’s maritime identity.

This layered heritage has been systematically collected and preserved by the Croatian Maritime Museum Split, whose rich collections also include objects connected to Lošinj – an island with an extraordinary maritime tradition. For the first time, the Museum will present these treasures in the very place of their origin.

The bilingual exhibition and accompanying publication are based on the catalogue through which the Split museum presented its Collection of Flags and Signal Flags. For its presentation in Mali Lošinj, the exhibition has been complemented with a selection of objects that contextualize the history of the Lošinj maritime community. In addition to the flags that once flew across the eastern Adriatic, visitors will be able to see, for example, a hand-drawn map of the Mali Lošinj Bay from 1750, the order book of the renowned Martinolić shipyard, ship models that brought fame to the island in different ways, as well as the moving testimony of a Lošinj girl who survived a shipwreck on the Sardinian coast in 1886.

The exhibition will remain open until 6 November 2025.
