In 2016, the Katalinić family began developing the site, which was then an inaccessible, rocky area. The only thing that existed there initially was the view. Everything else – the paths, dry-stone walls, native landscaping, and interpretive features – was created during the many years of work and dedication, with the aim of preserving the landscape and creating a place where heritage could be truly experienced.
Through carefully curated experiences, visitors discover Lošinj as an island of seafarers, captains, and shipbuilders.
By day, visitors can explore Providenca by taking the self-guided interpretive tour “Lošinj – Island of Captains” or the “Escape Trail Providenca”, inspired by the ship’s logbook of Captain Aldebrando Petrina.
In the evening, visitors can enjoy the “Gastro & Heritage Experience – Picnic at the Captain’s Table”, blending island gastronomy with stories of Lošinj’s maritime heritage.
Providenca is one of the few privately funded heritage projects in Croatia. It was created without public investment and continues to develop solely through the efforts and investment of the Katalinić family. For this reason, visits to Providenca are structured around curated experiences that ensure the site’s long-term maintenance, the preservation of its heritage, and a high-quality experience for every visitor.
The value of Providenca lies not merely in the view, but in the creation of a unique heritage landscape on what was once a rocky, barren area – a landscape that does not exploit nature but preserves and enhances it, using it to pass on the story of the island.
See, discover, experience, and fall in love with Lošinj!
