The vocal ensemble The Messengers was founded on November 11, 2002, in Zagreb and has since been performing under the artistic direction of Matija Škvorc.
The group brings together enthusiasts of sacred music and a cappella singing. Alongside gospel and Negro spirituals, their repertoire has gradually expanded to include select jazz and pop standards, which they perform in their own arrangements and in their distinctive, recognizable style.
As their name suggests, Messengers—or Glasnici—are bearers of good news. This is echoed in their slogan, “Bringing you the good news”, reflecting the positive message and joyful atmosphere they have shared throughout their years of singing and performing.
The ensemble has given numerous performances in Croatia’s capital, throughout the country, and abroad. One of their most notable appearances was in Macerata, Italy, where their gospel performance thrilled an audience of 55,000 people.
To date, The Messengers have released three albums under the Laudato label:
Good News (2011), featuring traditional gospel and Negro spiritual songs,Total Praise (2014),and the live album SwINGIN' with The Messengers (2018).
In 2016, they won first place and a gold plaque in the “free polyphony” category at the Festival of Music Zagreb, a competition for choirs and vocal ensembles. In 2018, they earned gold and first place at the world competition in Verona in the jazz, blues, swing, and gospel category.
